Special Announcement:
Purser and Associates announces that two important United States collections are coming to market – the collection of the late W. Wilson Hulme and The Newport Collection.

The Hulme Collection

Purser and Associates announces that we will broker the outstanding collection of the late W. Wilson Hulme. Wilson began collecting stamps in his childhood and was a serious collector and philatelic researcher for 30 years. Before becoming Curator of Philately for the National Postal Museum in August 2002, he served on the museum’s Council of Philatelists. A life member of the U.S. Philatelic Classics Society, he was serving as president of the organization at the time of his death.

Wilson had two main areas of interest. First, he assembled one of the finest 3c 1851-1857 collections in private hands featuring shades on and off cover with color charts, loads of platings and plate varieties both on and off cover, brushstroke essays, colored, town and fancy cancels, proofs and essays, earliest documented uses on cover, and a keen emphasis on perforations with many rarities.

Second, Wilson had a particular fascination with perforations in the 19th Century, and he assembled a wide variety of privately perforated U.S. classics and Confederate States issues on covers. The U.S. portion includes Chicago and Sewing Machine perforations. The Confederate portion features Baton Rouge LA, Oxford NC, Forsythe and Atlanta GA, Harrisburg VA, and more.

In addition, Wilson also enjoyed Speratis and formed a modest collection of these popular items. He also had an impressive and diverse variety of smaller collections that will draw great interest from the philatelic community.

Details on when and where Wilson's collections will be sold will be available at our website www.pursers.com in early 2008. Pursers will be pleased to provide bidding assistance and represent you at this important sale.

Second, we will be consulting on "The Newport Collection". Philip Weiss (www.philipweissauctions.com), a “general” auctioneer of stamps, coins, baseball cards and sports memorabilia, furniture, art, books, toys, comic art, Worlds Fair memorabilia, and much more, has secured a phenomenal US collection. Pursers estimates to be worth $4,000,000. The highlights are too numerous to list here. Mr. Weiss will conduct the sales at his Oceanside, Long Island New York Galleries. Andy Kupersmit, co-owner of Purser and Associates, will be consultant to the sale of "The Newport Collection". In his role as consultant, he will compose all of the descriptions.

The collection was formed mostly in the late 1960's and early 1970's with purchases from all of the major auction houses of the era as well as many prominent dealers. When he died in the late 1970's, one of his sons, with whom he had spent a few hours every Saturday studying and enjoying the collection, lovingly stored the collection for almost thirty years until he passed away. Now the collection is coming to market.

The highlights of this fabulous collection are literally too numerous to mention but the singles include an Inverted Jenny (Pos. 31), a set of unused 1869 inverts, a set of Pan American inverts, all Special Printings incl. Most of the important stamps and plates in the collection have Philatelic Foundation certificates from the late 1960’s and early 1970’s when the collector acquired most of his stamps, and they will have 2007 or 2008 Philatelic Foundation certificates when they are sold.

A four page color brochure will be distributed at the Pursers booth at the MEGA show and can be viewed here either in three parts as jpgs or in one part as a pdf. The brochure shows all 24 of the inverted centers that will comprise Part I and provides the details on the contents and sale schedule for Parts II, III and IV. You do not want to miss out on these landmark auctions.
